Gaston County Town Hall Meeting

Over 900 people attended the health care town hall meeting at Gaston Day School on August 27th. The third of three such meetings held on consecutive nights, the event was a great success. Overwhelming opposition to the President's ideas for health care reform was voiced from the audience. We began the night with an introduction from the school's headmaster, Dr. Rankin. Sue took the stage at 7:00 pm and after leading the audience in the pledge of allegiance, spoke briefly about her opposition to HR 3200, told what reforms she did favor, and then opened the meeting to questions. As she did the two prior nights, Sue pledged to take as many questions from the audience as they liked. We ended just before 11:00 pm with every one's questions being answered.

Cornelius Town Hall Meeting

On August 26th Sue Myrick held a town hall meeting on health care at JV Washum Elementary School in Cornelius. The event was held in the gym and was attended by over 900 people. We began at 7:00 pm when Cornelius Mayor Pro Tem Susan Medlin led us in the pledge of allegiance and then introduced Sue to the stage.

Sue gave a brief overview of why she opposes HR 3200 and then opened the floor for questions. She pledged to answer all questions and did. We finished the event at 10:58 pm.

Weddington Town Hall Meeting Photos

On August 25th we hosted a health care town hall meeting at Weddington High School. The event started at 6:30 pm with a packed auditorium that overflowed into the cafeteria. Estimated size of the crowd was 1400 people.

After the pledge of allegance lead by Weddington Mayor Nancy Anderson, Sue was introduced on stage. She then pledged to take any and all questions and did so. We ended with the last question at 11:00 pm.

Our visit to New Life 91.9 FM

This past week we stopped by New Life 91.9 FM to plug our health care town hall meetings. Thought you would enjoy some photos.

Ted Kennedy RIP

As they prepare to bury the late Senator Ted Kennedy I thought I would offer a brief note of the two times I met him. The first time was in 1986, when I was in Washington, DC on a school trip with Charlotte Christian School.

Our group of students was outside the Capitol Building waiting to meet Senator Jesse Helms on the Senate steps for a photo. At the time, I had a broken ankle (basketball injury) and was in a walking cast up to my knee. I could walk, but not very fast, and stairs posed a particular challenge as I had to take each step slowly due to the pain.

We were all standing around waiting, when all of a sudden Senator Kennedy walked out the door and down the steps. He literally walked right through the middle of our disorganized group and started down the long marble steps headed towards his Senate office building.

I was the only one in our group who saw him as he walked by and I blurted out "That's Ted Kennedy!" He kept walking. Every one in my group said "No that wasn't him... couldn't be... etc."

As an autograph collector, even back then, I was desperate to get someone to walk down the steps and catch him and ask for an autograph, as I knew I couldn't make it down the steps fast enough with my broken ankle. No one believed me that Ted Kennedy was walking down the steps (his back was to us now) and therefore no one was willing to chase after him. After about 30 seconds of this, I decided broken leg or not, I was going after that autograph.

I hobbled down the steps and literally chased him down a long side walk and caught him about half way to his Senate office building.

When I approached him, he simply turned to me with pen and hand and signed a Senate Gallery pass I was holding. He didn't say a word. I said thank you, but he just turned and kept on walking. He wasn't rude... just preoccupied, but still willing to sign.

When I returned to my school group, they could not believe that it really was Ted Kennedy and I proudly showed off my autograph.

I actually met him two years later at Wake Forest University at the first Presidential Debate between then Vice President George Bush (Sr.) and then Massachusetts Governor Mike Dukakis.

I was a freshman at Wake and as Chairman of the College Republicans got to serve as an usher for the VIPs in the audience. Everybody in politics was there that night and I got to assist several of them to their seats. I was 18 and fascinated with the whole process. I met Jesse Jackson, Pete DuPont, and Ted Kennedy that night. I got Ted to sign the program that was handed out that night.

As an aside, I actually ushered, then Mayor of Charlotte Sue Myrick to her seat that night. Twenty-one years later, I'm her chief of staff. Life is short and surreal sometimes.

RIP Ted Kennedy.

Our Visit To CATA

Last week we stopped by and took a tour of Union County's own Central Academy of Technology and Arts (CATA). What a cool place. It is really six schools housed under one roof. From Dance to Computer programming, this school is what education is supposed to look like in America. Special thanks to Principal Rodney Miller for the invite and thanks also to Superintendent Dr. Eric Davis and Union County School Board Chairman Dean Arp for joining us.

Sue Myrick Lunch with Union County Elected Officials

Last week, in between stumping against the health care bill, we held an informal luncheon with Union County Mayors, County Commissioners and General Assembly representatives at Monroe's Brown Derby. There was no formal agenda and the discussion focused on transportation, health care, budget and other issues.

I'm Not A Nuclear Engineer... But I Did Stay at a Holiday Inn Express Last Night

I enjoyed my time yesterday at the South Mecklenburg Rotary Club. Ok, you guys are intense on this Health Care subject!

I equally enjoyed the frank energy discussion with city councilman John Lassiter and County Commission Chairwoman Jennifer Roberts on Thursday at the nuclear round table cluster. Found it funny that I passed my business cards out to the right and Jennifer passed hers out to the left.
Talking to nuclear engineers made me feel like the guy in the Holiday Inn Express commercial. You know the one where the tour participant in the white coat helps avert a nuclear reactor meltdown, because he had a good night's rest at the Holiday Inn.
Clearly they are all brilliant. I on the other hand, have yet to figure out how to replace the batteries in my cam corder.

At any rate, I enjoyed both events. Check back first of next week for an update speaking schedule. Hope to see you soon.
